"You ain't stopping at

And I know the presidents, all of them. And I go where I damn

- A-No.-1
Why watch this?
Hobos during the Great Depression. Hitchin' Trains. Sledge
hammers and chains.
Plot Summary:
During the Depression, homeless men, aka hobos (also referred to
as "Bos" in the film) would often travel by freight train on the
Oregon-Pacific-Eastern (OPE) Railroad. On engine No. 19, a
ruthless conductor, called Shack, does anything necessary to
kick these vagrants off his trail (including murder). One
seasoned veteran hobo, called A-No.-1 (and known as the "King of
the Bo's"), decides to ride the dangerous No. 19 all the way to
Portland, mostly to show up a kid, called "Cigaret", who
brags too much.
| |
Dad's Preview: Through many exciting close calls, this suspenseful
action flick leads us to the obvious showdown between Shack and
A-No.-1. Shot in the beautiful mountains of the Pacific
Northwest, much of plot focuses on the plight of these poor,
out-of-work bums, who are just trying to make it through each
brutal day. As expected this film is carried by its two
exceptional lead actors: the cool, wise Lee Marvin as A-No.-1
and the hot-tempered, violent Ernest Borgnine, whose villainous
portrayal of Shack leaves viewers eagerly expecting his
comeuppance. If you dare, take my brother's recommendation,
and hop aboard for some high
adventure. |

"The core of man's
spirit comes from new experiences." – Christopher McCandless
(aka "Alexander Supertramp")
Why watch this? The
tale of this
deep-thinking young man has lessons for all of us.
Plot Summary:
There are those who are drawn to living life on the free edge,
as close to nature as possible. Beautiful mountains. Scenic
deserts. Raging rivers. One such person is Christoper McCandless,
a man in his early twenties, disenchanted with modern America,
and determined to experience life "off the grid". After
graduating from Emory University, he burns his credit cards and
embarks to see the wild, leaving behind no trail to follow. This
devastates all those who love him, but he MUST do this to be
honest with himself. He is a cheerful, intelligent kid who
enamors the wayward folks he encounters, yet breaks their hearts
when he moves on. His destination is Alaska.
| |
Dad's Preview: This film's
brilliance is that it's not selling an agenda. It simply, and
quite beautifully, documents the evolution of a free spirit. We
witness the romantic harmony of nature's beauty contrasted against
the brutality of life as a vagabond, always hungry and
overwhelmed by nature's power. As we also
encounter Christopher's free lifestyle, we have to be prepared to feel
heartbreak as well. Sadly, the lessons learned are painful, but
in a way, worth the
cost.

Why watch this?
I instantly fell for this uniquely warm and oddly funny flick.
Plot Summary:
After the sudden death of his loving foster aunt,
rebellious city kid Ricky Baker finds himself on the run in the
vast New Zealand wilderness with his grumpy foster uncle Hec. A
series of misunderstandings leads child services to believe Hec
has kidnapped Ricky, sparking a national manhunt. The unlikely
duo must learn to work together and survive in the challenging
bush while evading capture and forming an unexpected bond.

Dad's Preview:
You will enjoy this little independent film that came up out
of Kiwi-land thanks to director Taika Waititi. Young Julian Dennison is great as the
sharp-witted lad with a wanna-be gansta attitude. Sam Neill is likewise
awesome as grumpy old Hec, forced to take care of a kid who
really annoys him. The plot is great and there are many
laugh-out-loud moments. |

Why watch this?
This simple, compelling Western film focuses on a lone man in
the Rocky Mountains of the mid 1800's.
Plot Summary:
Jeremiah Johnson is a veteran who seeks to escape civilization
and live a solitary life as a mountain man in the Rocky
Mountains. He faces the challenges of the harsh wilderness and
learns to survive with the help of others, eventually forming a
unique family. However, a tragic event leads to conflict with
the Crow tribe, resulting in an ongoing vendetta and Jeremiah's
transformation into a legendary figure.

Dad's Preview:
There is a realness, a raw edge, to this neo-Western. Portraying
a wild, bearded mountain man was an odd choice for the suave,
handsome Redford, but it pays off. The story is based on the life
of trapper John "Liver-Eating" Johnson. Seeing our American
wilderness, as it was back then, is awe-inspiring. That said, it
would be a dangerous, confusing, and difficult place to survive.
That is the beauty of the film. I believe this is how it would
have been. The Native Americans are portrayed honestly, with
traits both brutal and humane. People isolated in a harsh
wilderness would all have to be a little odd. That is
reality. |

Why watch this?
This Western horror film is intense, gory, disturbing and

Plot Summary: In the
Old West, a small-town sheriff and his unlikely posse of four
embark on a perilous journey. Their mission is to rescue three
abducted townspeople, including a sheriff's deputy, local doctor
and his daughter. The abductors are a brutal, cannibalistic clan

They are expecting a tribe of Indians they can easily over-come as they
have times before. What they actually find is a blood-thirsty
cult of cannibalistic savages. This one
gets a little bloody, well actually, very, very bloody. |

isolated canyon in Utah when a boulder falls and pins his arm.
For the next five days, he faces the elements and examines his
life as he tries to survive his predicament. Ralston uses all
available resources and reflects on his relationships,

Dad's Preview:
This is a gut-wrenching film that solidly illustrates how quickly
anyone, even someone young, strong and confident, can land into
serious trouble in the wink of an eye. For goodness sakes, adventurers,
always let somebody know where you are going! Neglecting to do
so is not a sign of bravery. James Franco carries this rich,
inspiring movie, which is based on the compelling, true story,
Between a Rock and a Hard Place,
penned by Aron Ralson himself. This
story does illustrate one person's sheer will to defy death
by surviving at all costs. |

This powerful one-man show is Hanks giving a class on
method-acting. The audience really feels like they are on the

Why watch this? Men
pushed to the end of the line will do the most desperate things
to live.
Plot Summary:
Several unemployed men find themselves stuck in the isolated
South American village of Las Piedras. A Frenchman, Mario,
befriends an ex-mobster, Jo, a German. The only way escape is to
be paid for hauling several cases of nitroglycerin to an oil
well fire 300 miles away, over treacherous roads. Any bump can
cause the volatile liquid to explode, so two more men are
recruited to drive a second truck, because one truck will likely
not make it.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This tense film will
have you on the edge of your seat as the heavy trucks, loaded
with volatile nitroglycerin bottles, encounter
road stones, rickety bridges, and rock slides. In the end, it's
a character study in the ruthlessness of men exacerbated by
crisis. Some stay true to who they are, while some lose all
their humanity to survive. It would be remade in 1977 under the
name
Sorcerer, and that is also a film you should check out.

Dad's Preview:
During the actual

The scenes of the killer waves are incredibly shot, with

are some very uplifting moments, as victims pull together
to get people to safety and medical treatment. Look for a young Tom Holland in his

Why watch this?
Wayne rarely played against "the good guy" character. Here he is
downright nasty as a Western Captain Ahab.
Plot Summary:
Thomas Dunson is a determined rancher leading a massive cattle
drive from Texas to Missouri after the Civil War renders his
land valueless. Faced with Dunson's increasingly tyrannical
methods during the arduous journey, his adopted son, Matthew
Garth, must choose whether to challenge his adoptive father's
authority for the sake of the men and the herd. This conflict

backdrop of the cattle drive.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This picture is hailed by many as one of the greatest Western ever made.
I love it, too, but feel there are many better Westerns. This
features does, for historical purposes, depict the drama
and dangers along the epic "cattle drive". I grew up
working on a Texas cattle ranch hand so the topic of herd beef
rings true to me. Wayne's performance, channeling
Mutiny on the
Bounty's Captain Bligh, is
excellent as a herd owner who pushes his men too hard. This
results in a mutiny, led by his adopted son, Matt. They leave
Wayne on the trail with barely enough water to survive. Don't

Why watch this?
A memorable Texas border tale about murder, penance and retribution.
Plot Summary:
When an undocumented Mexican ranch worker is mistakenly killed
and improperly buried, his friend, a Texas ranch foreman named
Pete Perkins, remembers his promise to bury him in his hometown.
Taking matters into his own hands, Pete kidnaps the border
patrol agent responsible for the death and exhumes the body.
With his captive and the deceased tied to a mule, Pete embarks
on a long, arduous journey across the border to fulfill his vow.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This powerful neo-Western is both compelling on it's own and as
an allegorical tale. It wanders through a young border patrolman's
life - his hate-filled racism, his crime,
torture... and eventual redemption - all at the hands of a hard
Texas cowboy. Tommy Lee Jones and Barry Pepper deliver wonderful performances in this
grueling
journey to justice. This marked Tommy Lee Jones' first hand at directing,
and it's a stellar effort. What I noticed most was the attention
spent on all the little moments: Tender flashbacks between
friends, the odd encounter with the blind man, and the scene
sitting in the uneventful Mexican bar. There is a richness on
display here that perhaps only someone who grew up in a Southern
border state can appreciate, but I think it is broader than
that. |

"I never dreamed that any
mere physical experience could be so stimulating!" – Rose
Sayer
Why watch this? It's
a wonderful adventure film from the 50's with two Hollywood
icons.
Plot Summary:
Set during World War I, in German East Africa, Charlie Allnut, a
rough-and-tumble Canadian riverboat captain, finds himself
thrown together with a strait-laced British missionary named
Rose Sayer. Together, they embark on a dangerous journey down a
treacherous river on Charlie's dilapidated boat, the African
Queen, facing natural dangers and German forces. Despite
their vastly different personalities and frequent arguments, an
unlikely bond develops as they navigate their perilous mission.

Dad's Preview:
I've always been a lover of unlikely romances. Here we have the
uptight, religious spinster, Rose, and the rough, solitary chug boat captain,
Charlie.
Thrown together by circumstances beyond their control, they are
forced to brave a mighty Ulonga-Bora river, which is full of
obstacles to bring our two lead actors closer together. Casting
Humphrey Bogart and Kate Hepburn was pure genius. This is definitely one of my
top 10 romantic films. |

"Well, this is not a
boating accident! It wasn't any propeller, it wasn't any coral reef, and
it wasn't
Jack the Ripper! It was a shark." – Matt Hooper after
examining the remains of Chrissie Watkins
Why watch this?
It's Dad's top film, numero uno. It's ignited the love of film
within a curious 10-year-old.
Plot Summary:
Chief Martin Brody, new to the small island community of Amity,
faces a terrifying challenge when a massive great white shark
begins attacking beachgoers during the peak summer tourist
season. Despite Brody’s efforts to close the beaches, the town's
mayor, fearing economic repercussions, prioritizes tourism over
safety. As the attacks escalate, Brody teams up with an expert
marine biologist and a seasoned shark hunter to track and kill
the formidable creature.

Dad's Preview:
Jaws was the first major film from a young director named
Steven Spielberg. It is adapted from Peter Benchley's
bestselling book about a hungry great white shark dining on
bathers off the New England coast. There is suspense at every
turn thanks to deft direction and an
incredible Oscar-winning, John Williams soundtrack. There's
drama, dread, and some of the best
jump-scares on film. The film perfectly captured the novel's
mood, and added its own levels of character development, humor
and bloody terror.
After this movie, which stayed in theaters for OVER A YEAR,
folks
would start using the term "Summer Blockbuster". |

"He was a poet, a scholar
and a mighty warrior. He was also the most shameless
exhibitionist since Barnum & Bailey." – Jackson Bentley
Why watch this?
An epic movie about a man who's life was, in itself, an epic.
Plot Summary:
T. E. Lawrence is a British officer, who navigates the complex
politics of the Middle East during World War I. Tasked with
liaising between the Arabs and the British against the Ottoman
Turks, Lawrence becomes increasingly drawn into the Arab cause
for independence. He unites disparate Arab tribes, leading them
in daring raids and victories against the Turks, but struggles
with his identity and the conflicting loyalties between his
British origins and his adopted Arab allies.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This sprawling, grand adventure covers the life of T. E. Lawrence,
a
British soldier advancing England's interests in the Ottoman
Empire during World War I. Though huge in scope, the film does
mange to create
complex, intimate characters. This classic film is top-ranked on just about every
film list there is. It was
nominated for ten Oscars, winning seven including Best Picture, Director, and Musical Score. |

"By god, it ain't dyin' I'm
talkin' about, it's livin!" - Gus McCrae to Captain
Woodrow Call
Why watch this? An
American masterpiece that
perfectly balances Western myth and Western realism.
Plot Summary:
This epic Western is about two retired Texas Rangers, Augustus
"Gus" McCrae and Woodrow Call, who decide to leave their quiet
life in Texas for one last great adventure. They gather a crew
and embark on a massive, perilous cattle drive spanning 3,000
miles to the unsettled lands of Montana Territory. Along the
journey, the men face numerous challenges, including dangerous
terrain, outlaws, and personal struggles that test their
enduring friendship and character in the unforgiving American
West.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This epic saga is unforgettable, with its wonderful characters,
converging story lines and brutally honest plot points. Capt. Call is
a hard, determined leader. He's kept in step by his more
laid-back partner, Gus, whose warm smile reminds me of my
grandfather, Charley Straley. Charley was a lifelong Texas rancher...
humble, hard-working, intelligent, apolitical. He loved to joke,
smoke his pipe and partake in an occasional sip o' whiskey down
at the barn's tackroom. He and Gus would have been good buddies,
for sure. |
