"Our

year army and it's thousand year soldiers." -
German Captain Wafner
Why watch this?
It's suspenseful. It's gory. And there are evil Nazis involved.
Press Play.
Plot Summary:
On the eve of D-Day, American paratroopers are dropped behind
enemy lines into a Nazi-occupied French village. Their crucial
mission is to destroy a German radio transmitter located in a
fortified church tower. However, as they progress, the soldiers
uncover a horrifying secret beneath the church involving
sinister Nazi human experiments.

Dad's Preview:
This action horror flick instantly caught my attention, with me
being a WWII and zombie fan. American soldier are air dropped
behind enemy lines and what they encounter is not what they
trained for. This film has a little bit of everything: combat
action, secret serums, mutated Nazi zombies and tons of gore. If
you enjoyed films like
The Thing
(1982) or
Dog
Soldiers (2002), this thrilling horror film is for you. |

Uh,

Hawkins
Why watch this?
Its "found footage" presentation style adds a fresh take on a
stale genre.
Plot Summary:
The story follows a group of friends as they attempt to survive
an unexpected giant monster attack on New York City. At first,
there is confusion, then the situation quickly changes. The
destruction is devastating. Even the monster's "fleas" prove
deadly to the fleeing humans. The film is presented as a tape
discovered by the U.S. Department of Defense.

This found-footage film captures the

"All you people are so
scared of me. Most days I'd take that as a compliment. But it
ain't me
you gotta worry about now." - Riddick
Why watch this?
This is one hell of a sci-fi film. Strong female characters,
flying creatures and introducing the smoldering Vin Deisel.
Plot Summary:
A space transport ship carrying crew and passengers, including a
dangerous criminal, crashes on a desolate planet where it is
perpetually day due to three orbiting suns. The crash kills most
of the passengers, leaving a small group of survivors, including
the pilot, the criminal, a bounty hunter, a holy man, and a
young girl. They discover that the planet's seemingly lifeless
exterior hides a terrifying secret: a deadly species of
creatures that emerge to hunt in the darkness of the infrequent
total eclipse.
| |
Dad's Preview:
A very thematically dark thriller, where a space junket becomes
stranded on a remote desert planet. Their cargo includes a
violent criminal named Riddick. As the danger grows, so does the need
for anti-heroic Riddick's unique set of skills. This film is fast-paced, with
well-realized characters. I do particularly admire that the
threat, though quite vicious, appears to be an organic species,
akin to 500 lb. locusts. |

"You better wake up.

Why watch this? OK,

Plot Summary:
Blade, the man, is a unique being, possessing vampire
qualities (super strength, invincibility), but none of their
weaknesses (sunlight, silver, garlic), except his need to
consumer human blood. This makes him incredibly adept at hunting
and killing real vampires. He crashes a rave club in Los Angeles
owned by the blood-sucker Deacon Frost. Blade literally mops the
floor with dead vampires, but one manages to bite hematologist
Karen Jenson. Blade takes her to his hideout, where his friend
and ally Whistler, does all he can to keep Karen from turning
into one of the undead. Meanwhile, vampire leadership decides
that their race's survival depends on obtaining Blade's hybrid
blood, followed by his immediate death.

Dad's Preview:
This fang-cy cult classic
is vintage 1990's gothic, cyberpunk film-making. It is shocking
how similar (in tone, black leather and martial arts action
sequences) this is to
The Matrix
(1999), a film that would hit theaters one year later.
Regardless, Blade is a ton of gory fun with lots of
blood, blade-fighting, and exploding bad guys. I can see why it
has such a devoted following. |

Dad's Preview:
This sequel to
Evil
Dead (1981)
serves up a more sophisticated plate
over-brimming with the spoils of a better budget and the
genius of director Sam Raimi. Yet, it somehow manages to
retain the wonderful campiness of a low-budget horror
film. Amid buckets of bloody F/X, thrives the spastic
Bruce Campbell, who carries the film. He lobs snarky
one-liners as well as he does a red splattered axe. You
will shriek, cover your eyes, then laugh out loud
throughout. As Ash succinctly puts it... "Groovy." This
also paved the way for the excellent third film,
Army of

"What kind of alien, out of all the
places in the whole wide world, would invade some shitty council estate in south
London?"
- Dimples
Why watch this?
It's one of the best low-budget alien invasion films in years.
Plot Summary: A
South London gang and the nurse they just mugged must
reluctantly team up to survive when their council estate is
invaded by hostile extraterrestrials. What starts as a simple
robbery is interrupted by an object falling from the sky,
forcing the group to face an intergalactic threat with
improvised weapons. Throughout the night, they defend their turf
against predatory, fanged creatures as they learn to put aside
their differences for the sake of survival.

Dad's Preview:
This is the second effort from young British director Joe
Cornish and it delivers with confidence. Though centering on a
small group of unruly teenagers, it feels polished and bigger
than it is. There's a sci-fi freshness I have not felt since
Tremors
(1990), and that is saying a lot. It has action,
social-commentary, character-development and some great creature
effects. The strong performance by John Boyega (pre-Star Wars)
should be noted. This delightful movie, combining alien
invasion, horror and humor, is referred to as a genre-mashup.
It also considered a new cult classic. |

"The clue's
there. Sometimes the thing you thought was the most brutal
aspect of the virus, turns out to be the
chink in its armor. And
she loves disguising her weaknesses as strengths. She's a
bitch." - Andrew Fassbach
Why watch this?
These zombies swarm like huge locusts; it's really horrifying to
watch.
Plot Summary: A
rapidly spreading global pandemic turns the majority of the
world's population into dangerous, fast-moving zombies. Recalled
to duty, Gerry Lane, a former UN Investigator, must leave his
family and embark on a perilous, globe-spanning mission to
uncover the source of the outbreak and find a way to halt its
devastating spread. His journey takes him to various locations
and challenges him to confront the terrifying hordes and unravel
the mystery before humanity is entirely consumed.
| |
Dad's Preview:
There are zombie movies, then there is this tour de force. Something
(we never learn the cause) affects humans, and it spreads
hyper-quickly. These "zombies" exist for one purpose: to find
humans and turn them. They are fast, brutal and
immediately lethal. Brad Pitt portrays a government "special
agent" whose talent is finding out things; kind of a super
spy-sleuth. There's nobody better
equipped to figure out a solution amid the madness - I want to
be reincarnated as Brad Pitt. You will love this spectacle. |

"You keep dancing with

Why watch this?
Mudbound meets
From Dusk til

Plot Summary:
Twin brothers, World War I veterans, return to their hometown in
1932 Mississippi hoping to open a juke joint and start a new
life. Their plans for a safe haven in the Jim Crow South take a
dark turn when a sinister, supernatural force descends upon
their community. The brothers and their community are forced to
face this ageless, unexpected evil.
| |
Dad's Preview:
My prediction is that this film is going to age really well and
become a cinema classic. It is helmed by a young black director,
Ryan Coogler, who certainly brings the goods. It also features a
rising black star in Michael B. Jordan, portraying the dual
roles of twins, Smoke and Stack. That said, this genre-bender
grabs its viewers with a compelling look at the 1930's American
South from the standpoint of the African Americans enduring it:
the field workers, the gangsters, the language and, oh man, the
music. Then it jettisons itself into the blackness of dark magic
and hungry denizens of the night. All that came before is shoved
aside for a battle of survival. I loved every second of this
film's creative vision, musical-centering and visceral action. |

"Dad, you only care about

Why watch this? This

Plot Summary:
A divorced, workaholic father and his estranged young daughter
board a high-speed train from Seoul to Busan. Unbeknownst to
them, a zombie outbreak is sweeping across South Korea, and a
seemingly ill passenger brings the infection onto their enclosed
train. As the situation unfolds and compartments fall to the
undead, the passengers must fight for survival against both the
rapidly spreading infection and the escalating tensions among
themselves, hoping that Busan, a city reportedly holding back
the hordes, will be their safe haven.

Dad's Preview:
I am not sure if this film was influenced by
World War Z
(2013), but it sure has that same vibe. That's a good thing.
What this film does so well is character building: A father and
his bitter daughter. A man and his pregnant wife. A high school
baseball team. When the zombies start their attack, we are
invested in these people, and we hurt when they are injured or
killed. Also key is how well suspense builds from scene to
scene. On my second watching, I was on the edge of my seat - on
my second viewing. Wow. Gong Yoo, as the father, is great,
however I really loved Ma Dong-seok's character, Sang-hwa, who's
wife is pregnant. That guy, tough and capable, is my hero. |

A company of British soldiers against a bunch of
werewolves. Oh yeah!
Plot Summary:
A squad of British soldiers, on a training exercise in the
Scottish Highlands, stumble upon the remains of a Special Forces
unit and discover they're being hunted by a pack of werewolves.
The soldiers take refuge in a secluded farmhouse and must fight
to survive the night against the monstrous creatures.

Dad's Preview:
I love it when a film comes along, quietly, and revitalizes one of my
favorite genres. This exciting romp does that and more.
British soldiers on a training mission in the Scottish Highlands
encounter a coven of rather vicious lycanthropes. It's frantic, exciting, and brings to life some of the most terrifying
werewolves on screen to date. These nasty canines are 7-feet tall!
Professional dancers were brought in to portray the monsters
because the director wanted them to appear fit
and move gracefully... and I gotta say, it's a cool look. |

"Right from the

doctor to tell you that. It was the blood. There was something
in the blood." –
Selena
Why watch this?
It starts out pretty bleak, yet tensely builds to a great
ending.
Plot Summary:
An bicycle courier awakens from a coma to discover a deserted,
post-apocalyptic London, its population decimated by a
contagious "Rage" virus. He soon finds a small group of
survivors, but their desperate journey for sanctuary reveals
that the true horror may come from the surviving humans luring
them into their military compound.
| |
Dad's Preview:
As hard as it may be to believe, this is the first zombie film
to feature fast-moving zombies, and the impact is quite
terrifying. However, this well-done feature gives the audience
heart-stopping suspense sandwiched between genuine moments of
character-building. The two leads, Cillian Murphy and Naomie Harris, are
wonderful. Irish actor Brendan Gleeson also renders a great supporting
performance. One mildly predicable arc was the encounter with
human survivors who (of course) are more dangerous than the
zombies. How the film deals with that is bloody satisfying.
28 Days Later, I must say, kicks some serious zombie ass. |

Eric is resurrected by a mystical crow, gaining
supernatural powers. Guided by the crow, he seeks

Dad's Preview:
This anti-hero film just grabbed me and wedged itself into my

The Crow comics by James O.
Barr. There is such a sadness to this origin story. Things get

tenderness. Lead actor Jason Lee, the son of martial arts legend
Bruce Lee, was accidentally killed

treasure. |

"Who died and made you

Why watch this? It was high-time for a zombie comedy,

Plot Summary:
Shaun, an ordinary electronics salesman, faces the challenge of
a zombie apocalypse sweeping through London. He decides to

Dad's Preview:
Like the oncoming undead themselves, Zombie films had over-run
the film market. This fresh take on that genre is creative and
really, REALLY funny. It strikes the right balance between
comedy, satire, and playful gore. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost together are
an unstoppable comedic duo. You'll have to chuckle when the two
unwilling, unqualified heroes resort to flinging selections from
their vinyl LP collection at the slow-plodding ghouls. |

Plot Summary: Ash

and battle an army of the dead it has unleashed. Ash must lead

Dad's Preview:
This is the third film in the famed "Evil Dead" series

aspect of the first two films and turns it on its head. Ash is

unspeakable evil, all caused by the Book of the Dead. With a
shotgun in one hand and a chainsaw strapped on the other, Ash
revels in this newfound land where a gun can make you a god. "Shop smart, shop S-Mart!" |

Why watch this? It's a wonderfully dark French take on the werewolf legend.
Plot Summary: In

Dad's Preview:
This French film exudes "atmosphere". It's creepy,
sexy and surreal. A
mysterious, vicious creature is terrorizing 18th century France.
The plot is loosely based on the true story of the
Beast of Gévaudan. The film is historically inaccurate, but,
just let that go. In this case, I am perfectly fine with a
Hawaiian actor (who plays "The Chairman" on
Food Network's Iron Chef America) portraying a Native
American scout who demonstrates incredible martial arts
abilities.
It's engrossing as the two hunters search for the beast, and the
film's ending is... Wow! |

Why watch this?
It's as dreadfully suspenseful as a movie can get.
Plot Summary:
Driving a car across country, young Jim Halsey picks up a

After Jim narrowly escapes, the relentless hitchhiker proceeds

Dad's Preview:
This is the ultimate cautionary tale regarding why you should
never pick up a hitchhiker. It is brutal and a little
unrealistic, but that's what movies are for. No matter what the
young protagonist (delightfully portrayed by C. Thomas Howell) does, he cannot escape the homicidal maniac
who enjoys toying with his prey. I must point out that there is a "I
can't believe that just happened" moment... and it is very
disturbing. Intense actor Rutger Hauer really is a terrifying
menace here. This film is an exceptional horror-thriller. |

"That's why this time
I'd take pride in a citizen led effort that sacrifices no lives
at all! This next battle is not one waged to the death, but a
battle to live for the future." -
Kenji Noda
Why watch this? On
Godzilla's 70th anniversary, he won an Oscar for Best Visual
Effects. Way to go, Big G!
Plot Summary:
In 1945, kamikaze pilot Shikishima watches as his entire
garrison is wiped out by a monster of incredible size. This
leaves him with survivor's guilt and PTSD. When he returns home, he
learns his parents were killed in the bombing of Tokyo. While
mourning, he takes in a woman and orphan child. To get by, he
also signs on as a minesweeper. The monster, now known as
Godzilla, has mutated (thanks to US nuclear tests) to be
much larger. The Japanese Navy deploys Shikashima's boat to lay
mines and hopefully deter the beast's onslaught of mainland
Japan.

Dad's Preview:
As compared to films of this same ilk, Minus One stands
out for two reasons: 1) the plot is leagues richer than usual,
and 2) the monster visual effects are out of this world! This
version of Godzilla is much like the original film (Godzilla
1954). He's angry, murderously destructive, and all but
indestructible. In fact, his wounds heal instantaneously. We
more than feel for the lead characters as they wage war against
their internal demons, while trying to stop the chaos caused by
nature's deadliest mutation.

"Run for it? Running is not
a plan. Running is what you do when a plan fails!" - Earl
Why watch this?
Gigantic, underground, man-eating worms! That's a hard YES for me.
Plot Summary: Set in
the remote desert town of Perfection, Nevada, two handymen, Val
and Earl, decide to leave their dull lives. Before they can
depart, strange tremors and a series of mysterious deaths
suggest a dangerous threat lurks beneath the surface. Along with
other residents, including a seismologist and a survivalist
couple, they must fight to survive against unseen, giant
creatures that hunt by sensing vibrations.

Dad's Preview:
I cannot say enough about Kevin Bacon. In
Animal House
(1978) I hated him as a snobby frat boy. He has since earned
my respect. He
certainly is a hard-working actor. This monster film hits the right blend of horror/gore, action and comedy from start to finish.
Scientifically it's preposterous, so don't waste your time
trying to make it make sense. Just go with it. Fred Ward also
shines as
Bacon's hillbilly sidekick, Earl. The two become unlikely
protectors as giant worms threaten a small, desert hamlet.
Despite the topic, the film is well-done and very fun to watch. |

and Deep Dive of Aliens
"We better get back 'cause
it will be night soon and they mostly come at night... mostly."
- Newt
Why watch this?
The
Alien sequel brings the action and a lot more aliens
to deal with.
Plot Summary:
After surviving the alien attack, Ellen Ripley is rescued from
deep space after 57 years in stasis. She reluctantly agrees to
return to the planet where the creatures were first encountered
when contact is lost with a terra-forming colony established
there. Ripley and a group of Colonial Marines face an
overwhelming threat as they attempt to rescue the colonists and
battle, not one, but many aliens.
| |
Dad's Preview:
James Cameron took over as director and blew the lid off the
franchise with this thrill-packed sci-fi mega-hit. Again, at its
center is the very capable Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), but this time she's an
observer on a mission accompanied by a unit of bad-ass space
Marines. Their objective - find some missing colonists on the planet
where Ripley and her crew first encountered the original xenomorph -
Ripley and the marines
have no idea what they are walking into. Fortunately, it's
wonderful chaos for film audiences! |

Why watch this?
... Schwartzie and his biceps are at the top of their game in this action-sci-fi
thriller.
Plot Summary:
An elite paramilitary rescue team led by Dutch goes on a mission
in a Central American rainforest. During their operation, they
discover they are being hunted by a technologically advanced,
extraterrestrial warrior. The film follows the team's fight for
survival against this formidable foe, which hunts them for
sport.

Dad's Preview:
The ascension of Arnold Schwarzenegger from Austrian youth to
body builder to action hero is amazing - talk about the American
Dream. Part of his movie career success was his superb choices
of material... namely the Terminator films. This sci-fi action
film was so creative that it would go on to spawn a slew of
sequels (none with Arnold). Predator begins as an action movie, but quickly turns into
something else entirely - an alien collector hunting human heads. The energy from this film is incredible. Hold onto your
head. |
