Vardamon Ayers Dies (From Saturday's Daily Leader)

Vardamon Ayers who was shot by his brother-in-law, Lee Sorrell Wednesday evening, died at his home near Topsey, about one o'clock this morning from the effects of the wound in his chest. It was thought for a time the he had a chance to recover, but owing to the intense shock and the condition of the weather the wound proved fatal, Ayers living about sixty hours. As soon as the news of the man's death reached the city, County Attorney Arnold, Sheriff Morriss, and Justice of the Peace John Nichols left for Topsey where Judge Nichols held an inquest over the remains. Before leaving town, Sheriff Morriss went to the jail and informed Sorrell of the death of Ayers and asked him if there was any statement he wished to make. Sorrell declined to talk.

This is the first murder that has occurred in Lampasas county in fifteen ears and has shocked the entire community inexpressibly. It is learned that the affair started over a dispute as to who could chop the most cotton. Ayers was unarmed when shot. The dead man's wife, sister of Sorrell, who did the shooting, was a witness to the tragedy, and Sorrell's brother was also present and attempted to stop the quarrel.

  • Sampson Straley was in the Civil War in the Texas Confederate Army 2nd Frontier District between Feb 21 and June 1, 1864.

  • Clark County, AR census of 1850 shows as dwelling 405 in Greenville Twp:  "S. D. Straley, age 26, farmer from VA". Listed as his wife is "Ellen, age 18 from AR". Also listed in the home is 17 year-old Charles Lisenby (Ellen's brother, perhaps?). There was also a separate note added to the census b a local historical society which read, "Sempson Straley, age 25, married Ellen Lisenby, age 18, on 6 Sept 1849, per Marriage Book C, page 153."

  • Some accounts say that Sampson was shot and killed about 1870 in an incident in the Rio Grande Valley. His father was also shot, but survived.

  • There is an incredible account of life on the Texas frontier I found in Find-a-Grave. It is a letter from Mary H. Richardson to her brother, General Henry Lemuel Burkitt in Tennessee:

    Hamilton], Texas, Nov. 3, 1859
    Dear Brother:

On the 4th of September last the Indians came in among us, and after doing some other mischief, they paid me a visit. My husband was from home on business, and I was alone with my five little children, two miles from any other house. I had sent my two oldest (Mary and John) to drive up the cows, and did not suspect that the Indians were lurking near. They espied the children about three hundred yards from the house, and chased them towards home, where they fled for protection; and little was the protection that I, alone, a timid woman, was able to give against eight savages, thirsting for blood and plunder. Mary (the oldest) made good her retreat; but oh ! (sic) imagine my feelings when I saw them overhaul little John, and begin to stab him with a lance. I was much frightened, and expected nothing but to be massacred, together with my children. I thought of my gun at that critical moment. I took it down and fired, and kept firing, until assistance came to my relief. The Indians (as I suppose) thought there were men in the house prepared to receive them, and fled and left my child alive, but severely stabbed in the back, through the arm, and in the right side. He has recovered from his wounds.

    Your sister,
    MARY H. RICHARDSON.
