  • Excerpt from Andy Peperak's obituary:

Master Sgt. Andrew Albert Peperak, U.S. Army Ret., 74, of Connellsville, went to his eternal rest Sunday, November 23, 2003, at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh.

He was born August 13,1929 in New Salem a son of the late Andrew and Anna Kraynak Peperak.

Andrew was a graduate of Connellsville High School with the class of 1947. He was a Veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam Wars and also served at the Supreme Headquarters for NATO in France for 4 years. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1972 after proudly serving his country for 24 years. Andrew had also retired in 1995 from the U.S. Postal Service where he had worked as a Clerk in the Uniontown post office. He was a member of the Connellsville VFW #21, the Connellsville American Legion, F.O. Eagles#493, the B.P.O. Elks#503 and the Independent Slovak Club. Andrew was a lifetime member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Connellsville. Andrew was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother to his family. Andrew's life was full of his love for his devoted, large family, his love of his Catholic Church, and the simple pleasures of daily living. His favorite things were watching and waiting for the snow, watching his beautiful garden grow, and watching and enjoying his beloved family. Andrew was a proud devoted Veteran who in his daily living displayed his loyal patriotism of his great nation.

In addition to his parents Andrew was predeceased by a granddaughter Gabrielle Ann Peperak, a brother John Peperak, and 4 sisters Anna Marhulik, Catherine Hustek, Helen Franks, and Julia Baker.

Notes:
  • 1930 Census record indicates that Andrew immigrated in 1905, and Anna immigrated in 1907.

  • Andrew Peperak's naturalization papers supply a lot of information. This name is listed as "Endi" and he signed that name on documents. It lists his place of birth as Polonavitz, Hungary; his occupation as "miner"; he came to America from Bremen, Germany on the ship, Bremen, arriving at port in Baltimore, MD on Mar 4, 1903. It lists his wife as Annie born on Nov 15, 1887 in Polonavitz, Hungary, also.

  • Andrew's granddaughter has obtained records from the actual church in Polonovce (the Slovak spelling of Polonovitz) with more accurate information.  Andrew's birthdate was May 3 1886 and he way baptized on May 9 1886.  He was baptized as Andreas Peperak, son of Andreas Peperak (born also in Polonovce) and Catherine Horvath Peperak (born in Hadusovce).  You will notice on the naturalization that he renounces all allegiance to Charles Emperor of Austria and Apostolic King of Hungary the country of his birth.  At the time he was born this whole area was the Austria-Hungarian Empire.  It wasn’t until after WWI that the different countries were named the current names.  Polonovce was in the newly formed country Czechoslovakia which included the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Moravia, and other smaller ethnic regions with their own languages.  It wasn’t until  the last 25-30 years that Slovakia became its own country with Bratislava as its capital.

  • On a different record, the Manifest of the Passenger list arriving at Baltimore at that time, it shows his ship named Breslau, which sailed from Bremen on Feb 28, 1904 and arrived in Baltimore on March 9, 1904. He lists his occupation or calling as laborer, his "race or people" as "Slovak".  His last residence is listed as as Hungary (short for Austria-Hungarian Empire) and final destination as New Salem (a small town near Uniontown, PA where our Andrew Peperak spent his early years until moving to Connellsville, PA at about age 13).
