-
Information provided by Robert Vaughn at
rl_vaughn@yahoo.com.
The following information on Levi A. Durham comes from "History
of Middle Tennessee Baptists,"
by J. H. Grime, pages 185-186.
"The subject of this sketch was the son of the lamented Elder Thomas
Durham.
"As to the date of his birth and early life, we have no means of
knowing, further than that he was brought up on a farm situated at
the southern limits of the present town of Hickman (TN, Hickman
Co.), the home of his father during his stay in Tennessee. After
entering into life for himself he became a member of Brush Creek
Church, and it was under her watch-care that he began the ministry.
He was ordained to the ministry by this church in June 1827, by the
following Presbytery, viz.: Elders John Jones, Cantrel Bethel,
Presley Lester, H. W. Pickett, Miles West and Thomas Hooker. Though
young in years, he was soon reckoned among the leading ministers of
his time and section. Such was his fame that people would come for a
score of miles to wait on his ministry. Soon after his ordination he
was called to the care of Round Lick and Hickman's Creek Churches,
and probably others. In doctrine he was a strong Calvinist,
emphasizing the doctrine of God's sovereign electing grace. He was
an important factor in the work of the Association as long as he
remained in the State, once preaching the introductory sermon and
once acting as moderator.
"In the spring of 1835 he resigned his charges and moved to the
State of Mississippi, where the curtain falls, and his name is lost.
Where he fell and where his dust sleeps, we do not know. But in the
morning of the resurrection, when God shall gather his elect from
the four winds, we shall see this noble saint of the Lord and hear
him tell with a new tongue the victories of the cross."
Robert believes he is the same Levi A. Durham mentioned in "Flowers
and Fruits from the Wilderness" by Z. N. Morrell on pages 190-191
though he hasn't proved it. If he is correct, he was in west
Louisiana or east Texas by 1844.

Another entry from research found on ancestry.com:
"Levi Durham was a graduate physician of the old school, and
in the midst of administering for the cure of ills appertaining to
carnal man, he became converted, and, being very conscientious, laid
down his pill boxes and sought to equip himself, by dilligent study
of God's word, to cure sick souls, following in the footsteps of his
dear old father. There things were told to me by your precious
grandmother whose memory I revere. My mother, having passed away,
came to me in sickness and trouble; would sit by my bed-side and
read aloud to me the beautiful hymns of Watts and the sacred poets.
Her life was pure and noble, and her end was peaceful. She had
tenderly ministered to the necessities of her orphaned
daughter-in-law. Our devotion to each other was comparable to Naomi
and Ruth. "Here God my God and her people my people." "

From "Daughters of the Republic of Texas
Patriot Ancestor Album" is mention of America V. Durham and Levi Durham. It is from

married Martha Ann Frances Goode; William James (born ca. 1831, died
1864), married America V. Durham; Canzada (born 1833, died
1914), married Anderson M. Gibson; Lucinda (born ca. 1835, died ca.
1878), married Isaac W. Peters; General L. (1837, died 1877),

James T. Morgan; Sarah (born ca. 1842, died ?), married (1) W. M.

"After Sarah's death circa 1853, Hilliard married Elizabeth P.
Durham, widow of Levi Durham, circa 1854. Hilliard and Elizabeth had
no children from their marriage. (Hilliard DURDIN (b. 1798;
d. June 29, 1863) is buried at Pilgrim Rest Cemetery,
