Notes:

  • From T. Moody via email:

"My grandmother Lula Katherine Durham was born September 23, 1871, in the eastern part of Orange County, North Carolina. She was third eldest of eight children (three girls, five boys) born to James Samuel Durham (1842-1895) and Harriet Deliah Stroud (1844-1913). James, a master carpenter, was the son of Alvis (1806-1881) and Catherine (1816-1883) Durham.

Alvis, a wagon maker, and his first wife Susan Faucett Durham joined with eight other neighbors from Cane Creek Baptist Church in Orange County to found the Mars Hill Baptist Church, north of Hillsborough, on June 29, 1834. Susan died in November, 1837, and on October 31, 1838, Alvis married Catherine, the daughter of Gilbert (1792-1847) and Sarah (1794-1859) Strayhorn. Alvis and Catherine, in turn, went with several other families to found Mount Hermon Baptist Church, nearer the town of Durham, on June 24, 1848. Alvis served as the church clerk at its founding and helped purchase the property for the first church.

I recall going to homecoming Sundays, with dinner on the grounds, at Mount Hermon. Alvis and Catherine had at least two other children, Sarah, born in 1849, and Martha, in 1854, and Alvis served as a Justice of the Peace in Orange County. In 1881, Durham County was created from Little River, Lebanon, Patterson, and Durham townships in eastern Orange County. Alvis and Catherine are buried at Antioch Baptist Church west of Chapel Hill."

Notes:

  • Per T. Moody 2:
"James Samuel Durham was born in 1842 in eastern Orange County (later to become Durham County) to Alvis Durham and Catherine Strayhorn. He had a brother John S. (born 1840, died 1910) and two sisters, Sarah, born 1849, and Martha, born 1854, as well as four older half-siblings from his father's first marriage to Susanna Faucett (born 1809, died 1837).

He enlisted in the Orange County "Guards of Independence" on September 2, 1861. The group became Company G of the 28th North Carolina Infantry Regiment 19 days later at Camp Fisher in High Point, N.C. James was captured and exchanged at Fredericksburg in December 1862, hospitalized in Richmond in May 1864 from a gunshot wound, and surrendered as First Sergeant of his company at Appomattox in April 1865.

He returned home at the war's end and on July 29, 1865, married Harriett Deliah Stroud, apparently the daughter of a Justice of the Peace, born December 26, 1844. They lived in the new town of Durham and had five sons and three daughters. They attended Durham Baptist Church (later First) and in January 1888 helped found Blackwell Baptist Church (later Temple). James died in 1895 and Harriet on April 14, 1913. Harriet is buried in Durham's Maplewood Cemetery as are all of her children except Robert. Her husband James' gravesite is undiscovered."
