Luther Windham, about 35 years old, was shot and possibly
fatally wounded this morning at his home in the Dullin community, W. J. Lewis
surrendering and being lodged in the Brown county jail pending the outcome of
Windham's wounds. At 4 o'clock this afternoon the county attorney and
coroner were summoned to the Windham home, on the advice of physicians attending
the wounded man, it being apparent at that hour that death probably would result
soon. The cause of the shooting is not known. To a neighbor
who came to Windham's house a few minutes after the shooting, Windham said it
was an outgrowth of a quarrel over cotton. Windham is a son-in-law of
Lewis. Deputy Sheriff Carl Adams, who went to the scene of the shooting
found a long barreled Colt pistol of and old model near the place where Windham
fell. The shooting was done with a shotgun, but it was not determined
whether one or more shots were fired.
A neighbor, who was at work in the corn field four or five
hundred yards away, said his afternoon he saw Windham drive up to his home in a
truck, accompanied by another man. Windham, according to this witness,
left his truck as a man came out of the Windham home with a gun in his hand, and
began running, falling as he was shot. The man who fired the shot,
according to this witness, went first to the truck and then to the spot where
Windham lay on the ground, and then left the place. Windham a few minutes
later was helped into the house and physicians and officers were summoned,
according to this witness. |
