Plot Summary:
This horror anthology adapts three classic, macabre stories
written by
Edgar Allan Poe. The separate segments follow a grieving
widower whose dead wife's sprite returns to killer her daughter
("Morella"), a vengeful husband who imprisons his adulterous
wife and her lover behind a brick wall ("The Black Cat"), and a
dying man's wish to use hypnotism to delay his death ("The Facts
in the Case of M. Valdemar"). The tales blend gothic dread with
touches of dark comedy to bring these chilling tales of
obsession and revenge to life.

Dad's Preview:
Around Halloween, I start to crave two things
cinematically: horror anthologies and Vincent Price.
This film gives you both! Each eerie short-story stars
Mr. Price and is shock full of creepy
supernatural horrors and devious plots - you know, a
dead woman's spirit, a melting man, cobwebs and death
galore - truly wonderful frights for the season.
However, I most enjoyed the middle feature, "The Black
Cat". It features horror legend Peter Lorre as a
dastardly drunkard who discovers his wife's infidelity,
then decides to seal up the strumpet and her lover
behind a false brick wall in the basement. This segment
has some genuinely hilarious moments, then ends with
quite a feline discovery. This is best watched on a
dark, stormy Fall night. |
