"To wives and
sweethearts. May they never meet." - Capt. Jack Aubrey
Why watch this? A
roaring adventure on the high seas, when men were rough and
tough!
Plot Summary:
During the Napoleonic Wars, Captain Jack Aubrey of the HMS
Surprise receives orders to pursue and neutralize the French
privateer Acheron, a formidable and faster vessel
operating in the South Atlantic. A cat-and-mouse chase ensues,
testing the resolve of Aubrey, his crew, and the ship's surgeon
and naturalist, Stephen Maturin. The pursuit leads them on a
perilous journey around Cape Horn and into the Pacific Ocean,
where they encounter both natural dangers and unexpected
challenges.
Dad's Preview:
This
Oscar-winning epic (for Best Cinematography), with a really long
title, feels a lot like one of the old Hollywood high-seas masterpieces,
akin to
Mutiny on the Bounty (1935). Crowe and Bettany carry the film
with solid performances, but the movie moves along a bit slow.
However, its realism will hit you
in the face like a brisk spray of sea mist!
