"Why can't people mind
their own business? Idiots. Interrupting me at every turn. The
more they babble, the more they drown out the memory of her
voice." – Otto Anderson, mumbling to himself
Why watch this?
Aging alone can bring out the worst in some people.
Plot Summary:
Otto, a rigid and grumpy widower grieving his late wife, decides
to end his own life after being forced into retirement and
losing his sense of purpose. His suicide attempts are repeatedly
interrupted by the arrival of a lively young family who moves in
next door, forcing him into reluctant, daily interactions.
Through these persistent new neighbors, particularly the
quick-witted Marisol, Otto finds a new sense of community and
purpose, gradually opening his heart to life again.
Dad's Preview:
This simple plot focuses on an aged curmudgeon who has lost his
wife, hates people and wants to end it all. This is a film of
interactions, some funny, some not so much. As we encounter a
stranger, we sometimes wonder what makes them so rude. This film
helps us to remember that everyone has a reason; a story worth
hearing. The dependable Hanks is the soul of this grumpy old
moving picture, but the lovely Mariana Treviño is its heart. She
exudes love and normalcy like a beacon of hope for all of us to
see... Be kind. Help others. I'm doing the best I can - People
sure need more of that.
