Why watch this?
Sharp cutting dialogue, spoiled starlets and Bette Davis.
Plot Summary:
An aging Broadway star named Margo Channing takes a young,
seemingly star-struck fan named Eve Harrington into her inner
circle as an assistant. As Eve becomes indispensable to Margo
and her friends, she secretly manipulates relationships and
professional opportunities to take over Margo’s career and
personal life.
Dad's Preview:
This drama focuses on the general ruthlessness surrounding the
New York theater scene. The film's players vary from conceited
actresses to slimy theater critics. True friendships are rare
and it's very unwise to trust anyone, even those that act the
most innocent. Here, the lead actors chew up each scene with
jaded vigor and confidence. I confess it is fun to watch. This
film was the darling at the 1951 Oscars nabbing six of the
golden statuettes. All About Eve saved Bette Davis'
sagging career. Her role in many ways mirrored events in her own
life. She literally is living her character's life, and her
performance is unforgettable. A young Marilyn Monroe even makes
an memorable, if brief, appearance.
