 Starring:

"I can't listen to
this anymore. I can't accomplish a goddamn thing of any human
meaning or worth until we cure ourselves of slavery and end this
pestilential war! And whether any of you or anyone else knows
it. I know! I need this! This amendment is that cure!" -
Abraham Lincoln
Why watch this?
Folks laud our colonial forefathers... they should look to
Lincoln instead.
Plot Summary:
In January 1865, President Abraham Lincoln fights to pass the
13th Amendment to permanently abolish slavery before the Civil
War concludes and returning southern states can veto it. He
employs a team of political operatives to secure the necessary
votes from a reluctant Congress, relying on intense lobbying and
strategic compromises. While navigating this high-stakes
legislative battle, Lincoln manages intense pressure from his
cabinet, a tumultuous family life, and the moral weight of
continuing the war.
| |
Dad's Preview:
It was the pivotal moment in U.S. history. The mistake of
accepting slavery as a thing on our shores had brought us to a
Civil War. North vs. South. Brother vs. brother. Lincoln,
portrayed by the great Daniel Day-Lewis, knew in his heart that
slavery must be abolished to enable our nation to honestly live
by its constitutional tenet that "all men are created equal".
This Spielberg effort, though a bit long on speeches and
homespun musings, brilliantly encapsulates the mind of America's
last great non-partisan leader. Its all-star cast is amazing,
and Sally Fields shines as Mary, Mr. Lincoln's loving but firm
wife. Abe was my kind of person. Frank. Mostly honest. A lover
of amusing tales. Yet, a man who could see clearly the right
path for a nation. For this he was assassinated. Let that sink
in. |

Aretha
Robinson to young Ray as he is going blind
Why watch this?
Jamie Foxx shines as the incomparable Ray Charles.
Plot Summary:
This biopic chronicles the life of legendary musician Ray
Charles, following his journey from a childhood of poverty and
tragedy in the South to his meteoric rise as a trailblazing star
in the 1950s and 60s. While achieving immense musical success,
he grapples with personal demons, including a long-term battle
with heroin addiction and the emotional trauma of losing his
sight and his brother at a young age.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This film delivers on two major fronts: First, it's a
wonderful journey back to the life and times of Ray
Charles - from humble beginnings to the top of the
charts. Mr. Charles wasn't a saint, but his story told
here is certainly compelling. Second, we are blessed to
sit back and appreciate Jamie Foxx as he becomes the
legend. His quirky performance is eerie, as he mimics
Ray's every mannerism. It helped that Foxx could play
piano, but he didn't sing for the film - for that, they
used recorded versions Ray's voice. Foxx deservedly won
the Best Actor Oscar. Though this film airs some of
Ray's demons, it is more about the obstacles in his path
and the eventual redemption that he earned. |

that is quite another thing, sir. And I have no stomach for it,

Why watch this? It's
a history lesson we need to understand now more than ever.
Plot Summary:
This seven-part miniseries chronicles the life of Founding
Father John Adams, starting with his defense of British soldiers
after the Boston Massacre and his pivotal role in the American
Revolution. The plot follows his journey as a devoted husband
and dedicated statesman, serving as a diplomat in Europe, the
first Vice President, and eventually the second President of the
United States. It highlights his often turbulent personal life,
strained political relationships, and his profound, unwavering
partnership with his wife, Abigail.
| |
Dad's Preview:
Based on the book by David McCullough, this in depth character
study centers on the pivotal years for one of America's most
influential early political figures. As with any historical
biopic, historians (rightfully so) picked it apart. I simply
suggest that all mediums portray history in somewhat
fictional terms - it helps the story move along better. You
will have to look long and hard to find a better accounting of
early American life. This does not play like a lavish BBC period
piece. There is a rawness, an honesty, at work here and it feels
like an organic account of the original colonies and their
struggles. I loved Paul Giamatti as Adams, again, because he
feels like a real person. Laura Linney also captivates as his
wise spouse and informal council. I have to applaud the great
Tom Wilkinson as Benjamin Franklin. His performance is so good,
you'll overlook that he is 5-inches taller than the real
Prophet of Tolerance. This stellar effort garnered a slew of
TV awards. |

Johnny Cash
Why watch this?
This amazing, heart-rending film takes us on the road with a
legend.
Plot Summary: This
biographical drama explores the life of country music icon
Johnny Cash, from his humble beginnings in rural Arkansas to his
explosive rise to fame. As his career takes off, his personal
life begins to unravel due to his struggles with substance abuse
and the breakdown of his first marriage. Ultimately, his
tempestuous romance and musical collaboration with fellow singer
June Carter become the driving force behind his personal
redemption and legendary success.
| |
Dad's Preview:
I am a Johnny Cash fan, not because I grew up with him,
but through discovery in my thirties. There is an
Americana honesty that he brings like no other. His five
American series albums, which he recorded late in
his life, are must-haves if you like music. This is the
telling of his hard-scrapple Arkansas roots, his rise to
fame, and the hard road to get to the only woman he ever
loved. This man lived a life worth hearing about.
Joaquin Phoenix's performance is so damn good. The only
better performance is that of Reese Witherspoon as June
Carter. She is incredible, as the feisty, funny and
angelic Miss Carter; and she deservedly won the Best
Actress Oscar. They both did all the musical work
including the vocals. Wow. When the final credits
rolled, I felt like I had experienced their
tumultuous lives, and now I more clearly understood the
man in black.

Plot
Summary:
In the pre-Civil War United States, a free Black man named
Solomon Northup from upstate New York is abducted and sold into
slavery. He endures twelve years of brutality and hardship on
cotton plantations in Louisiana, facing cruelty from his owners
and struggling to survive. Despite the challenges, Solomon
fights to maintain his dignity as he desperately looks for ways
to regain his freedom.
| |
Dad's Preview:
Here we are graced with great performances from an all-star cast. I wept long
and hard after this film. The audacity of anyone to justify the owning of fellow human beings makes me want
to scream. The direction and acting are top-notch, and Chiwetel
Ejiofor leads the list, as the Northern free man taken into
bondage. Slavery is a gaping scar on
our country's legacy. To EVER move on, American citizens need to face it, teach it in
our schools, and accept responsibility. |

Why watch this?
It's one of my favorite sports films, and I hate the
Eagles.
Plot Summary:
This is the true story of Vince Papale, a 30-year-old substitute
teacher and bartender in 1970s Philadelphia, who faces a series
of personal setbacks including losing his job and a separation
from his wife. A lifelong Philadelphia Eagles fan, Vince decides
to try out for his favorite team when the newly hired coach
announces open tryouts. Despite never having played college
football, Vince's determination leads to him being offered a

Dad's Preview:
This is the story of
Vince Papale, a local bartender who made the Eagles team

an attempt to find a spark. The rest is
Philadelphia Eagles history. This may be the greatest underdog
story ever. Wahlburg is superb as the regular guy who gambles on

Dick Vermeil, and Elizabeth Banks as Janet, a sassy Giants fan
who falls for Vince. My son and I met Mr. Papale at an Eagles game in

"My mother used to say

Why watch this?
The hike, the miles - it's about the journey to forgive oneself.
Plot Summary: Cheryl
Strayed went on a 1,100-mile solo hike along the Pacific Crest
Trail in 1995. Driven by a desire to cope with the death of her
mother, the dissolution of her marriage, and a history of
self-destructive behavior, she embarks on the arduous journey
despite lacking experience.
| |
Dad's Preview:
Breath-taking scenery is the backdrop for Cheryl's journey. She is herself wild, self-destructive, used up,
tired. So,
to shake her demons, or die trying, she sets off on her quest,
woefully unprepared, yet, determined. Witherspoon's portrays
Cheryl is angry, raw and vulnerable. We sense this is her
last chance to fix things.
Laura Dern gives an free-spirited performance as Cheryl's late mom, Bobbie.
Cheryl's physical journey parallels her mental one. I must admit,
this might be a
journey I need to take.

man to volunteer for a suicide mission, especially when it's on

Why watch this?
It's an educational, and thoroughly engaging, film about the
U.S. space
program.
Plot Summary:

astronauts. It follows their selection and rigorous training as
they strive to be the first Americans in space, juxtaposed with
the exploits of legendary test pilot Chuck Yeager.

"They won't fear it

J. Robert Oppenheimer
Why watch this?
The Manhattan Project changed everything in a world shackled to
a war with no end in sight.
Plot Summary:
This historical drama details the origins of atomic theory, the
determined scientists, the desperate military leaders, the
governmental pressures - all to culminate in a world-changing
event. It is a moment in our nation's past that is truly
incredible, yet simultaneously horrible - the advent of nuclear
fission. Oppenheimer was an American theoretical physicist who
served as the Manhattan Project's director at Los Alamos
Laboratory, where the atomic bombs were developed that would
obliterate two Japanese cities, Nagasaki and Hiroshima, and
effectively end World War II.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This is a story, often only a few paragraphs in history books,
best told using an in-depth, smart and visceral film. Delivered
in a non-linear fashion, this superb film weaves together all
the factions at play, the characters and their inner thoughts,
all taking us on a scientific journey to detonation; a crowning
achievement that many immediately regretted. Cillian Murphy
always brings conviction to his roles, and here he shines as the
title character - we feel his inner-conflict, and though
we pity his position, he remains a hard-minded, man-of-science.
It won seven Oscars including Robert Downey Jr. for his intense role as Lewis
Strauss. Thanks to an all-star cast and stunning visuals, the film soars
as a historical document on the weapon that prompted Oppenheimer
to posit, "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds." |

Why watch this?
A superb mobster film with great performances from the film's
stars.
Plot Summary:
This epic chronicles the rise and fall of Henry Hill, an
Irish-Italian American who, from a young age, became involved
with the Mafia in a working-class Brooklyn neighborhood. He
begins working for local gangsters and climbs the ranks,
eventually becoming a trusted associate, alongside Jimmy Conway
and Tommy DeVito. The film explores the allure and brutality of
their lifestyle, showing how the trio navigate the world of
organized crime through robberies, extortion and violence.
| |
Dad's Preview:
Another great Brooklyn mob film from Martin Scorcese. This is a
great education on mob wise guys, and their code as they
conduct numerous illegal activities. There are three main
characters: Jimmy (De Niro), a truck hijacker and gangster;
Henry (Liotta) who fences for Jimmy, and Tommy (Pesci), the
pint-sized,
loose-cannon muscle who loves to pick fights and commit murder.
This film is violent and does not at all glamorize the
lifestyle, but it's well-done, with some great performances. And Pesci,

break-in at the Democratic Party Headquarters in the Watergate
complex. As they investigate, they uncover a much larger
political conspiracy, tracing the trail of illegal activity
higher and higher within the Nixon administration, despite
obstacles and threats to their safety. Their persistent
investigative journalism ultimately aims to reveal the truth
about the Watergate scandal and its connections to those in
power.

Dad's Preview:
This is a very intelligent film about the Watergate scandal in 1972. As a teen, I did
not understand what
Watergate entailed
- this film helped a
lot. There are stellar performances from Hoffman, Redford and Robarbs, who
all work for the Washington Post. Together they expose a depth of political corruption
that includes officials, senators and the even the U.S. President. As with most scandals, it's
all about the cover-up. This certainly
applies today with horrific events related to Enron, the Penn
State Sandusky scandal, and child molestation occurring in
various religious and civic organizations.

supportive friendship blossoms between the two men as Logue

Dad's Preview:
This wonderful period film centers on King George V and his
stuttering problem. To help, he hires a renown Australian speech

teacher breaks through to a very stubborn patriarch. At the Oscars, it won Best Picture, Best Actor, Best
Director and Best Original Screenplay. Firth won for Best Actor,
but I find Geoffrey Rush's performance, as the patient
therapist, to be just as compelling. This is a speech that is
well-worth experiencing. |

Plot Summary:
This silent film chronicles the 15th-century trial of Joan of

visions. The film focuses on her intense interrogation by church
officials who attempt to force her to recant her claims and
beliefs. Ultimately, she faces a brutal punishment and becomes a

This silent film is called historical, as it was created

battles during the

England, She was then tried for heresy. The
religious court threatens and intimidates her in a effort to get

production value and use of close-up shots for effect. You will

Dad's Preview:
In real life, Patton was larger than life. Here is a spanning epic
that manages to paint an intimate portrait of this complicated,
often controversial, military leader. He inspired his men, yet was brutally hard on
them. He was such a prima donna that he was often at odds with
his superiors. Regardless, he was a military genius who was
instrumental in our Allied forces defeating the Nazis in WWII. |

Dad's Preview:
This is the true story of John Merrick, who lived in
1800's England, and was severely deformed. We
witness how horrible
people with disabilities were treated in that era. It was a
wise choice to present this cinematic masterpiece in black and white. It
is quite
beautiful and sets the period's mood perfectly. It was
nominated for 8 Oscars, but failed to win a single one (truly a crime). |

Dad's Preview:
It's hard to argue with 8 Academy Awards. This film is massive and
unrelenting, as it follows the life of Mohandas Gandhi, and his
non-violent protests against the British occupation of India. Ben
Kingsley's performance is hypnotic - he transforms into the
peaceful leader. The man Gandhi, was a
miracle of a humanity on this Earth and we should all acknowledge
his beliefs and way of thinking. |
